“What is the easiest way to learn classical guitar?”
People often ask me this question a lot, especially parents who feel that the topic is difficult and they will take lessons and spend a lot of money, and their son/daughter may not know how to play guitar in the end.
The easiest way to learn classical guitar from scratch is to buy a guitar and take the matter seriously.
But the application is a little tricky because we are dealing with the guitar as a hobby or something to do for fun, and not something to take it seriously.
Think about that when you wanted to learn anything, and let’s take the game FIFA, for example! The first time you grabbed that joystick and played a match with your friend, did you score any goals? Not likely.
You still don’t know the controls or the tackling, or even the button that shoots. So, what did you do? Every day after school, you went to your friend’s house and play for at least two hours, if it is not 4 hours or more.
To learn classical guitar you will do the same. There is something in our body called Muscle Memory. This is what makes you text on the mobile while you are driving, and wear clothes while watching TV.
Muscle memory is a memory in the muscles and in the fingers of the body. Every time you do something and repeat it hundreds or thousands of times, the muscles save them so that you get them back quickly when you do them again.
Remove the joystick and replace it with the guitar and you will see that it is the same. What is required of you is that you hold the guitar, of course, not for two hours a day, half an hour is enough, and practice the exercises in the book or the teacher gave you, even if they are only 3 exercises.
The whole idea is not in the number of exercises, as it is in repeating the exercise so many times. why? Because the muscle memory that we talked about memorizes the places of notes or chords on the guitar and becomes easier, and you do not need any effort from you to remember them or change between them.
“I’ve been doing this for two months, but still no results!”
This might happen, for the last two months you’ve been holding the guitar every day for half an hour, but you are practicing wrong!
Yes, there are such an important factors that you must take into account when you are learning, for example:
- There is no clear method you are following.
- You are still a beginner and you choose a very difficult piece to play.
- Your guitar is out of tune, and everything you are playing you can’t hear it, or feel that you are playing wrong.
- You watched 300 hours of videos on YouTube titled “learn classical guitar”, and that got you no where.
- You had a bad guitar teacher.
And the list goes on.
By the way, I went through all the above when I wanted to learn classical guitar – except for YouTube, because there was no internet at all!
For 3 months, I played one exercise! I swear to God It’s the truth. One exercise, there is no other, this is what I know about guitar.
The important thing is I want to shorten all this suffering for you and tell you the easiest way to learn classical guitar, because the first two months in learning are the most important in the journey, because if you see an early result, even if you play Happy Birthday, you will feel that there is hope, and that one day you will play advanced pieces.
easiest way to learn Classical Guitar
1) buy a classic guitar, not acoustic
You will thank me later because the classical guitar has soft and easy strings, the acoustic guitars have steel strings, and your fingers will suffer at first.
Which brand? Buy what your budget can afford now, you don’t need Alhambra guitar to start with.
I wrote an article on Best Classical Guitars for Beginners, you can read it here.
2) look for a good guitar teacher
This is an option, but it is the easiest way to learn classical guitar. Because a good teacher will ask you: “What do you want to play in a year or two?”, and you will answer or show him on YouTube what you want to play.
Based on this, he will choose the best method for you to take you to the style you want to play. Unfortunately, there are many teachers who do not care about this point and treat students as if they are in the school.
If you want to know more about how to choose a good teacher, please read this article: How To Choose The Best Teacher For You.
3) Make Time to practice
As I said before, treat the guitar as if it were FIFA or Assassin’s Creed. Choose a time when you are not tired, and not at the end of the day when your battery is low and you hold the guitar as if you are doing the homework!
You are doing something that you are supposed to love or want to be good at, so you must find a certain time for it.
It is preferable that you make a corner dedicated to the guitar. It contains the guitar, books, music stand and a comfortable upright chair without arms.
It is all ready.
4) give yourself time to learn
For example, “I will learn guitar for 6 months, and I am not gonna quit before that.” In this way, you programmed your subconscious that you will try for 6 months.
Of course, during this period, you must do what we said in the last point, practice!
To learn classical guitar and actually get results don’t require a lot of work in the beginning. Just buy a classical guitar, work with a good guitar teacher, and practice for 30 minutes three or four times a week.
I don’t think that this is a lot to ask in return of the joy you will get from the playing classical guitar pieces.
